Step 4: Once you have finished your research, use PowerPoint to create a slideshow of your topic.
The slideshow does not need to be longer than 3 slides – The purpose of the PowerPoint slideshow is to inform the rest of the class about your topic – the powerpoint format has been created for you.  You can open it at the bottom of the page under "Resources" You will use the following outline:

 1st slide: topic, you and your partner’s name
 2nd slide: information you learned about your topic
 3rd slide: pictures that represent your topic
• ***You are not required to create a slide for your info on  Long Island New Jersey. Just answer the questions on your guided question sheet

Novel Study

We are beginning our novel study of this week.  Before we begin , you will research the setting of the novel. Seeting is defined as where and when a story takes place. The story is set in the  Long Island, United States of America during the 1960s. With a partner,  you research the important themes that will help you understand the novel. First you'll be assigned in pairs.  Each pair will use a laptop to research one of the following topics:

• The Vietnam War
• Music
• Fashion
• The Yankees
• Walter Cronkite
• Martin Luther King
• "Hippies"
• 1960's Random Trivia

• Shakespeare's, The Tempest

Student roles: Computer Navigator - this student will use the internet sources to help find the answers as well as enter the info on the PowerPoint slides
Note Taker - this student will write down the answers to the questions while researching and will help the Computer Navigator enter the info on the powerpoint slides
Step 1: Once you and your partner know your topic, you will decide who will be the "computer navigator" and who will be the "note taker".

Step 2: Pick up the guided question sheet.  They are at the front of the room and are titled according to your research topic.  There will be 5 questions to guide your research on your topic.    In addition, write down three questions you have about your topic to help guide your research.  These questions cannot be "yes" or "no" questions - the answers need to have detailed answers.  For instance:  "Is Vietnam near China?" would not be an appropriate quetsion, however "Where is Vietnam in relation to China?" would work, because you have to find a more detailed answer.  *** You cannot ask that question! It was just an example ***
There will also be 3 questions about Long Island and 5 questions about Gary Schmidt.

Step 3: Use the following website sources, depending on your topic, to answer your guided question sheet, as well as the three questions you had on your topic.
