The novel took place in 1967-1968. Mr. Hoodhood said that Heather was not allowed to go to university because Comlubia University is the school striking against the War and Racism. Mr.Hoodhood didn't want
his Daughter going to protest against War at Columbia University because, "the whole world is crazy and nothing is crazier than University" Said Mr.Hoodhood. Mr.Hoodhood was right and wrong about not letting Heather go to university. He was right because I don't think any parent wants their child involved in War or even protesting. It could be dangerous for her because she could get killed even though the War is in Vietnam. Mr.Hoodhood was wrong not letting Heather go to Columbia University. Mr.Hoodhood was wrong because he is stopping Heather from pursuing her dream of becoming a flower child (Hippie). Some people use to have the same attitude like Mr.Hoodhood. Years ago kids were not allowed to make their own choices especially who they were going to marry.

            I always wondered when I would go to university or college. I would think it would be a gigantic place, a school but a lot larger, and there would be a ton of people. That's how I thought about it when I was young. I would always pretend to go to University or College at home, acting like a teacher and teaching my pretend students. That's how my big imagination was. I would say that everyone would love to go to university or college just like Heather, Holling's sister. During dinner in the Hoodhood's 'Perfect' house, heather talks about wanting to go to a college called "Columbia College." But, Mr. Hoodhood does not allow her to go because the school is on a strike to protest against the Vietnam War and racism, which means, no classes are going to be in session. Mr. Hoodhood did not allow her to go to college for many reasons. The most important one was that he wanted to keep her safe from that entire riot that is happening there. He also does not want her to go to college because she already has a job here, which is working as a secretary at Hoodhood and Associates. With Mr. Hoodhood's reasons, I strongly think that he is both right and wrong. Parents should care about their children when they are moving out, or in this case, moving in to college. Things could happen to them, so he is just being protective. I also think he is wrong because even if she has a job, children need to learn new things, which are the purpose of going to college. But I think Mr. Hoodhood's attitude towards Heather is like most parents today. He reminds me of my parents sometimes, but not about the fact about him caring about his job than caring about his children. Overall, I think Mr. Hoodhood should put her into college for intelligence and for her to be a more responsible young adult and as a student.

The Decision

If you wanted to go somewhere but your parents wouldn't allow you, would you obey them or still go? Everyone wants the best, but sometimes your parents disagree to what you want. Heather wished to go

to Columbia University where every student protested against racism and the war. As a result, classes were always cancelled due to the protests. Mr. Hoodhood didn't want her to go to university because he wanted her to stay at her job, so that she would be safe. In my opinion, I think that he is right because if she went, she wouldn't be safe with all the chaos and she wouldn't even learn much since there would be no classes. She would be safer if she just sticks with her job which is exactly what Mr. Hoodhood wanted for Heather. People today still act like Mr. Hoodhood because parents know what is best for their child most of the time. This reminds me of when I asked my parents if I could go to a high school nearby, but they want me to go to a farther school because it would be easier for them to pick me up and drop me off. This relates to Heather's situation because the decision was also up to her. Anyways, if you were put in this position, what would you choose? Remember, the decision is up to you!

1967-1968 was a time of war, racism, and many other things that made this time period dangerous towards the people. In the book "The Wednesday Wars", which is set in the year of 1967-1968, Heather Hoodhood and her father have completely different views on almost every political issue that was going on at the time. Heather wants to be a flower child that believes in peace and does not agree with many of the choices that were being made by the politicians of the time. Mr.Hoodhood was the type of parent who valued the males of the family rather than the women. He disagreed with almost everything that his daughter believed in. Being the only son in the family, Holling was to inherit his father's business, even though Heather was the oldest. One night, during diner, Heather and her father had a short discussion in which her father told her that she would not be attending college. I can see why Mr.Hoodhood would not want Heather to go to college, but it is also wrong of him to plan his daughter's life for her. Mr.Hoodhood's reasoning for not wanting Heather to go to college is probably because of the college she wants to go to. Heather wants to go to Columbia University, which at the time was on a strike to protest war. Mr.Hoodhood probably also does not trust Heather to make the right choices and thinks she will only be safe if she stays and works for as a secretary for his family business. Despite his reasons,
he should not have the right to stop Heather from going to Colombia University and making her own life choices. From what I've read in the novel, I would think that Heather will not be going to the university,
since she unwillingly does everything her father says. Like Mr.Hoodhood many parents today try to plan their child's future for them. Many of these children would probably not be happy with the
lives their parents planned for them. From what I know about Heather Hoodhood, she would not be happy with the life her father wants her to live.

Mr.Hoodhood is always a strict parent. What he tells you to do you have to do. He won't even let you ask why. This is the dilemma Heather is facing. Heather wants to go to Columbia University but her dad
won't let her. Mr.Hoodhood's reasons for Heather not to go to University are right but also wrong. One reason is that at Columbia University is where they are on strike to protest because they want peace and no war. Since the University is on strike there are no classes. So Heather won't study. One other reason Mr.Hoodhood does not want her to go University is so she won't become a hippie. Plus Mr.Hoodhood offered a job for Heather because now she can get a job without going to College. Mr.Hoodhood is right in one way because he wants his daughter to be safe. Heather is also right in one way because even if she wants to be a Doctor her father won't let her go to University. Mr.Hoodhood is not giving her the choice of freedom to do what she wants in the future. I think overall Heather is right because Mr.Hoodhood bosses Heather each time. I think people still have this attitude. People still have this attitude because their past was probably like

   Mr. Hoodhood really only cares about his company. To him, all of the decisions that Holling and Heather make have to help Mr. Hoodhood's company in some way. So, if Heather went to college, it would mean that she wouldn't work at Hoodhood and Associates, which would mean that Mr. Hoodhood wouldn't have a secretary, which would mean that he would have to spend a little money from his overflowing bank account to get one. Not only that, but Heather wanted to go to a school that protests against the war, and "doesn't have any classes" (which it probably does, but I think Mr. Hoodhood was exaggerating when he said that), which Mr. Hoodhood disagrees with.

   I understand why Heather wants to go. She probably wants to get away from working at Hoodhood and Associates, but she probably also wants to help the protest against the war, as well as racism. I agree with her. I mean, why should she have to be a secretary for the rest of her life? Shouldn't she be allowed to be whatever she wants? And if she worked as a secretary at Hoodhood and Associates, it would mean her dad would be paying her, and he'd probably ask for all of the money back, anyway, and make up some excuse, like: "Hey, Heather, I need your salary back. You live in a family, right? So then you're going to have to help out more often, by giving some money!" If I were Mr. Hoodhood, I'd say to Heather: "You go ahead and be a hippie! I mean, they have a bad sense of style, but, hey, they're stopping the war!"

   Usually, it's the other way around for people today. People don't usually encourage their kids to NOT go to college; they usually try to get them to go to college. And, usually, they let their kids decide what they want to be when they get older. But, the setting of the book was in 1967-1968, so I'm guessing that those were pretty messed up times, with lots of pandemonium, due to the war and racism.

   Either way, Mr. Hoodhood always gets what he wants, and I believe that Heather will never get to college, unless there's an incident in which she runs away from home or something.
